Call Center- Rough Colour

One of my shots of the Call Center. I've tired to go for dull neutral colours as well as slightly darker ones. I plan on adding dirt and grime, so as to show the center is dirty- hence why it has a mouse infestation. I'm not sure which version I prefer though.

Juggling Scene Extended

I know that some of the panels on the Call Center sheet are not in order but this post was mainly focusing on my extended juggling scene.

These last two sheets focus on the opening of my story, two shots to show the mouse falling and an explanation as to how the mouse ends up facing a different way. I need to put them in with the rest of the story boards for them to make a little more sense. The idea for the opening because I'm sure Phil wasn't too sure about showing a sign with the words 'Call Center' a strong idea. So I went back and changed it to a Disney styled opening. Where the scene is shown human size and then pans in to the smaller character. The scene after the opening credits from 'Basil, the Great Mouse Detective' is a very good example of the technique used. (Scene starts at 2:50)

However as my mouse is on a shelf, I will be using the technique in reverse. Panning from desk height upwards to the shelf.

To help me draw the Call Center room and photocopier properly, I looked up images of the room and machine. Cropping and colouring next.

Psycho

Psycho was created in 1960 and was directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Unlike in Rope, there is a lot of editing taking place.

Like Rope, I rather enjoyed this film. I enjoyed the fact that I wasn't able to guess the ending, I didn't suspect such a twist at the end. I knew though what was going to happen in the shower scene, for it was shown briefly in the documentary 'Cutting Edge' as an example when talking about Hitchcock's work.

Rope- Alfred Hitchcock

Rope is a film directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1948. Through out there film there is a lack of editing, which is what it is famous for.

I rather enjoyed watching Rope. The lack of editing I did miss at first, for there were moments, where I wished the film would just cut and then move onto the next scene. However, I soon began to enjoy the lack of editing as it enhanced the theatrical feel to it. The camera movements worked very well to. When Phil said that it's risky to keep the camera still, but that it worked well during the scene where the house maid clears away, I agreed.

All through out that entire moment I was sitting there wanting to desperately call out to her to hurry up putting everything away and open the trunk. I look forward to watching Psycho tomorrow, as like Ruben said, we haven't had a film lecture in quite a while and I to was beginning to miss them.

Bouncing Ball Center Pivot

Not much to say about this. Rather fun.

Three People Conversation

They are determined to find that wolf. No idea why.

Character Design- Final Sketches 2

Another set of character sketches. This time of the mouse jumping . The bottom two sketches were drawn using the two images below as reference.

Character Design- Coloured

Coloured my character to give it more personality. The ear and tail are slightly wrong though. One ear is higher than the other and so you would have seen it from the side. The tail could also do with being curvier and long on the side figure.

Abstract Watercolour Paintings

Tom suggested I upload these for all to see. I did them about a year ago whilst doing a Foundation project at Maidstone UCA. For future projects I’d be quite interested in doing it again, potentially as concept art as it could help give me a unique style and it would certainly be interesting to see this kind of water colour effect recreated in Maya/3D.

Character Design- Final Sketch

My final character design for the mouse. I've tried to keep it simple.

Pendulum Swing

Panning Shot

Did the panning tutorial. I was rather surprised at how simple it really was.

Tom and Jerry

I have also been looking at Tom ands Jerry to get another perspective on the different style of drawing. The style is cartoon compared to The Secret of NIMH and Redwall. I also looked at a video to get an idea of how a cartoon mouse would move.

Essay Research

For my essay research I've been looking at books to do with film editing and because the film I am analyzing is set in India, Indian culture in films. I also looked into psychoanalysis to understand how the audience would react to the film.

Bouncing Ball

Rather enjoyed animating the bouncing ball.

Shots Conversation

Don't know why she's looking for a wolf...it was the best thing I could think of. I think I missed one or two shots though.

Whole Storyboard

My final 3 act scene. It wasn't until I finished them that I realized I hadn't explained how the photocopier starts working. I was going to add in that the mouse accidentally presses the start button on its way down. The idea was that the mouse falls down into the photocopier after dropping its meal. In an attempt to stop the piece of cheese from being crushed, the mouse juggled it over the machinery inside. Along the way the cheese gets broken into two, hence why the mouse has two pieces of cheese to juggle.

Storyboards and Final Essay Idea

A few pages of my story board for my final idea. They are all in number order from top to bottom (I thought I'd mention it seeing as I numbered them using Kanji rather than roman numerals). They're 2 pages out of 10. The idea is that the mouse looses its lunch and so chases after it. The reason the call center is called Mousehole is because it's based on a real place in Cornwall.

Because my mouse gets trapped inside a photocopier, I looked up images on what the inside of said machine looks like.

My final idea for my essay is Slumdog Millionaire.

Death In Disguise

I didn't get the chance to say anything about this image during the storyboard discussion so I'll post it up here. When Phil was talking to Elliot about his story idea and how it could actually be death who is the undertaker, this image instantly sprung to mind. All I will say id, look closely. It isn't what it first appears. It took me two views before I realized why people said it was sad.

Redwall Part 2

It wasn't until I watched the second part of the first episode that I stumbled upon the juggling scene. With the video I paused it and tried to sketch the position of the hands so that I could see how they move when someone juggles.

The juggling scene starts at 1:44 roughly.

Thursday 11 February 2010

Redwall

I looked at Redwal as suggested by Tom to help with an idea on how my character will look. Turns out I have heard of Redwall, although I have never properly seen it. I rather like the the way the eyes are drawn.

More Character Sketches

Just a few more sketches for my mouse character. I think I'll stick with the main character being a mouse. It makes things a lot more interesting.

Just a few few notes I took during the storyboard talk.

The Juggler

To help me get a better idea of how a juggler moves and how they actualy catch and thorw their objects around I looked up some vidoeos on jugglers.

I also looked at some images to get some insperation for drawing a mouse juggling cheese.

Mrs Brisby- Drawing Tutorial

To help with some inspiration and to see if drawing my character will help, I watched this tutorial on how to draw Mrs Brisby, from 'The Secret of NIMH'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_pp6epHnyk

I had to upload a link because adding the actual video was disabled.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tosHoqLPKNo

I also watched the film to help me get some ideas and to see how a mouse could be drawn in cartoon style.

Slumdog Millionaire Storyboard

Storyboards following Phil's advice about pausing a film and then watching it shot by shot. I can now see what Jolanta said about how you don't realize how many shots are actually in a scene. These 3 pages are about 3-4 seconds worth of film.
